The Regional Projects and Technical Manager is a senior leadership role within AGL, responsible for overseeing and directing project execution, heavy lift operations, and technical workshop management across East Africa, and oil and gas operations in Mombasa. This includes leading specialised teams in delivering critical logistics solutions for heavy lift, oversized, oil and gas, and project-specific cargoes. This role demands extensive industry expertise, strategic planning capabilities, and operational excellence to ensure profitability, safety, compliance, and customer satisfaction.
Project Management:
Oversee the full lifecycle of regional logistics projects, particularly focused on Heavy Lift and Out of Gauge (HLOOG) cargo.
Ensure successful delivery of projects aligning with contractual KPIs, scope, timelines, and quality standards.
Maintain and manage project budgets, proactively addressing financial variances to maximize profitability.
Develop comprehensive commercial proposals, method statements, and operational plans tailored to specific project requirements.
Implement rigorous Quality, Health, Safety, and Environmental (QHSE) standards, ensuring compliance with international best practices and client specifications.
Technical and Heavy Lift Operations:
Provide strategic leadership and technical expertise on heavy lift operations, asset utilization, and technical project assessments.
Direct operational strategies to maximize the efficient use of company-owned heavy lift assets, minimizing reliance on subcontractors.
Evaluate and manage fuel consumption, operational costs, and asset performance, consistently driving operational efficiency and profitability.
Oversee preparation and execution of specialized lifting plans, route surveys, and transportation studies essential for safe and compliant cargo handling.
Oil and Gas Operations:
Lead all oil and gas logistical operations in Mombasa, ensuring seamless execution, compliance with industry-specific regulations, and achievement of commercial objectives.
Coordinate with oil and gas clients, managing contracts, operational planning, and strategic logistics solutions.
Ensure alignment with global oil and gas operational standards, maintaining high safety and environmental stewardship.
Workshop Management and Technical Oversight:
Direct oversight of technical workshops in Mombasa and Nairobi, ensuring operational efficiency, compliance with internal procedures, and international technical standards.
Implement and optimize the Maximo asset management system to streamline maintenance, reduce downtime, and ensure high asset availability.
Monitor and control maintenance schedules, preventive and corrective maintenance processes, and spare parts management.
Conduct regular reviews and implement strategies to minimize operational costs related to consumables, parts, fuel reserves, and workshop operations.
Stakeholder and Resource Management:
Lead, mentor, and develop direct reports, including Assistant Project and Workshop Managers, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.
Engage effectively with internal stakeholders, including senior management, commercial teams, and other departmental heads to ensure alignment and support for project objectives.
Maintain professional relationships with external stakeholders such as regulatory bodies (KRA, KPA, KEBs, URA), clients, and subcontractors, ensuring seamless coordination and compliance with regional regulations.
Risk Management and Strategic Initiatives:
Proactively identify, analyze, and manage operational and strategic risks, deploying effective mitigation strategies.
Continuously evaluate operational procedures, recommending and implementing innovative solutions to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve client service delivery.
Support strategic initiatives and business development activities, contributing technical and operational expertise to commercial bids, RFQs, and tender proposals.
Manages and controls all day-to-day activities of the Engineering Department and ensures that the Maintenance Programme of the group is properly planned, implemented and accomplished according to company policies and budget. The purpose of the role is also to provide technical expertise and to ensure that equipment availability and reliability is achieved to the highest possible standards through close monitoring of critical functions and compliance with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the Unit.
Oversees maintenance of terminal equipment including daily and hands-on inspection to ensure that policies, procedures and guidelines are adhered to. Contributes to the continuous improvement of processes and preparation of annual capital and expense budgets. Ensures equipment reliability and performance meet required production standard through equipment performance monitoring statistics & by maintaining proper maintenance programs. Coordinating with the Maintenance and Operations team regarding the implementation of scheduled Preventive and Corrective Maintenance Works completion on time and within acceptable budgeted cost. Ensuring that all engineering work is performed to the highest standard to meet operational & safety requirements. Provides supervision and direction for the Terminal Work Group including recruitment, training and career plan development.
Focus Areas:
Mechanical Workshop. Overseeing the installation, maintenance, repair and servicing of mechanical equipment and machinery such as Reach Stackers, Empty Handlers, Terminal Tractors, Terminal Trailers, Forklifts and Service Vehicles. This includes planning, organising and controlling the maintenance activities of the team to ensure the effective delivery of operational services related to heavy and cargo/container handling equipment as well as managing a dedicated team of mechanical engineering technical staff to ensure a high quality and timely service.
Facilities Maintenance. Overseeing the maintenance of various buildings and facilities at expected levels to ensure clean, safe, and comfortable work environments are provided for employees and other stakeholders. This includes planning, organising, and supervising various work activities, as well as monitoring progress of work performed by facility maintenance staff and custodian services and ensuring that all electrical, mechanical, civil works and building related maintenance programme for the whole container terminal are properly planned, implemented, and accomplished according to company policies, budget and KPI expectations.
Power Plant and Substations Maintenance. Overseeing and coordinating the maintenance and repair of the Power Plant and Substations, and all aspects of daily plant operations. This includes directing and supervising the work of related maintenance employees in performing skilled and semi-skilled electrical and mechanical work installing, maintaining, calibrating, modifying, overhauling, troubleshooting, and repairing a variety of electrical, mechanical, and electro-mechanical equipment and systems repair, maintenance, monitoring, troubleshooting, modification and testing of turbines and equipment at the Power Plant and Substations. It also involves the repair of various electrical controls, instrumentation, programmable logic controllers, process control computers and other electrical/electronic equipment.
Provided project management for local and international clients through the development of detailed design calculations, analytical reports and solutions-based strategies for diverse teams. Improved commercial aspects, maintenance systems and continuous improvement for staff and processes and diversification of company growth.
Responsible leader and mentor in project engineering for heavy lift projects including planning, leading, organising, and supervising the day to day activities of the heavy lift and workshop departments.
